Michael's Mind - May 2022

In the pastor’s office is brought a genuinely intelligent and spirited five-year old girl. Her mother has told me, “She is ready.” To give an example, Mom asks, “Angela, would you like to have Jesus in your heart?”Angela rolls her dark eyes and answers, “No, I don’t think I want the responsibility!”
Sharper than even her stunned mother thought! We like Jesus. His miracles are stunning. His teachings are inspiring. But are we up to the responsibility of self-denial and carrying a cross...loving our enemies and praying for those who use us?
Our recent past has elevated the “me generation.” Do my own thing-I will dress, talk, act however I want. If you disagree with me (us) we will burn you, destroy you, silence you.
I recently read about a University in Japan that established a “Ninja Studies Program.” Students in the program spend two years studying the history, the training regimen and the martial arts of the NINJA-the famously skilled assassins. The end result? Like many special studies programs, a degree. But you won’t graduate a full- fledged NINJA. The program emphasizes, “ This is a course to learn about the NINJA, not to become one.”
There are a lot of people who want to learn about Jesus but do not want to take that final step of denying ourselves to follow as a disciple of Jesus Christ.
Ah, But Your Land Is Beautiful is the title of my 2nd favorite book by Alan Paton, set in the days of Apartheid. The Head Master of a school stands up against the racist system there and quits his job. A friend warns him, “You know you will be wounded. Do you know that?”
The Head Master points to Heaven, “When I go up there...the big Judge will say to me, “Where are your wounds?” If I say I haven’t any, He will say, “Was there nothing to fight for?” I could not face that question.
Shall we own up to the responsibility and the call of the road to reconciliation in Christ?
